Hair loss can cause a variety of emotional difficulties that aren’t so easily overcome by covering up or wearing wigs; when your hair starts to thin, and nothing you do seems to help, your self- esteem takes a hit and everything you do is often affected in the process. For people with thinning hair, the conversation about how to fix the problem is often a quiet one because no one wants to talk about this sensitive issue. Women and men all over the world have suffered from thinning hair or complete hair loss for centuries.
There are multiple treatment modalities for these various types of hair loss that are expensive, time-consuming and sometimes painful. At Amirova Cosmetic Clinic in Sydney, we understand the seriousness of the issue and want our patients to know that there’s nothing to be embarrassed about because we hear you. We’ve listened to the conversations about thinning hair and the many over-the- counter treatments that continue to disappoint. For our patients consumed with worry about their thinning hair, we bring you an amazing new treatment that will help you regain lost hair follicle growth using platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a natural way of encouraging hair growth in individuals that suffer from alopecia (loss of hair). This treatment using blood plasma to increase blood flow and reintroduce reduced production of growth factors was first utilised in the healing or sports- related injuries as celebrity athletes needed to find a way to bounce back from their muscle strain or sprain injuries. Platelet-rich plasma allowed physicians a way to provide that solution since this naturally flowing serum is abundant in the body. We make new blood cells and plasma each day! This blood plasma is part of the immune system response to healing, regeneration and growth in a variety of tissues since stem cells reside here as well. Platelet-rich plasma is a serum that has to be separated by centrifuge from red blood cells and other layers of plasma which required revolutions for about twenty minutes and this blood is taken directly from the patient beforehand.
What does PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment involve?
PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) for hair loss treatment at Amirova Cosmetic Clinic requires that each patient has a couple of blood vials drawn before the treatment. After this blood is taken, we put the vials through a few sets of revolutions in the centrifuge machine that will separate the layer of red blood cells from the required layer of viable blood plasma. This process takes about 15- 20 minutes, and plasma is then placed into a small insulin syringe for scalp treatment. An hour before any PRP for hair loss is applied, patients have a thin layer of anaesthetic added to the scalp to decrease any discomfort from injection during the treatment.
Once the anaesthetic has set into the scalp, we inject the areas that we would like to see hair growth in lines, using several injections. The injection process can take an hour or so to complete, depending on the size of the area we intend to treat. Every patient at Amirova Cosmetic Clinic says the process is comfortable and relatively quick. After these injections, a variety of five different growth factors will call for increased circulation and work with the skin and hair follicles to elongate these hair shafts for fuller, thicker, healthy hair.
How many treatments do I need?
During your consultation for platelet-rich plasma and hair loss treatment, we will create a custom treatment plan for you based on your treatment areas and desired results. Most patients require three treatments that span four to six weeks apart to start. After which, we require yearly or bi-annual treatments to maintain steady hair growth. Compared to the many other treatment methods out there for hair loss, these PRP treatments are cost effective and have the best-proven results based on patient trials.
Side effects after PRP?
While some areas may become tender, swollen or bruised with injections into the scalp, there are no other issues present and you can return to your daily activities the next day. If you experience any other concerning skin irritation, please call Amirova Cosmetic Clinic and speak to our treatment specialists so we can schedule for an immediate follow-up.
When is the best time to start PRP for hair loss treatments?
We encourage patients to consider PRP for hair loss in the first stages of hair loss when first hair begins to thin. Platelet-rich plasma treatments are not recommended for those patients that have significant scarring.
